How do spaceships get into the sky?

Spaceships have powerful rockets to lift them off the ground into the sky. The rocket motors help spaceships escape from the earth’s gravity. The rocket motors also help spaceships overcome the resistance of air as they leave earth.

Spacecraft need special heat shields to stop them melting when they plunge back through the air ( atmosphere) around the earth. The spacecraft gets very hot as it forces its way through the air at high speed. When they get close to the ground, spacecraft need parachutes to slow them down for a “soft” landing.

The United States has built space shuttles that have stubby “wings” and can glide back to earth by themselves. Space shuttles are covered in special ceramic tiles to protect them when they plunge back through the atmosphere around the earth.
