Recent school phone ban

From the start of Term 2 phones have been banned in schools, colleges, in New Zealand because of the National Party policy. The cause is pretty self explanatory, people being on their phones rather than being face-to-face with people,  cheating with your phones, distractions. And what do I think about this? I will probably not have a phone until I turn 14 or so, but it could slightly help with people on their phones, and give them a break.

Adding decimals

This is an IXL activity but in the maths group I am in, we are learning about subtracting and adding decimals. For example, the problem above is 3.9+9.7. You can use the algorithm strategy for adding decimals. .9 and .7 are in the tenths value. Add them up, carry the 1 in .16 to the ones place. 1+3+9 is 13. So our answer is 13.6.

Cat Fact- Babyface cuteness

Have you ever wondered why cats are so cute? So cute you want to cuddle or swallow them?

It is because there is a psychological response to cuteness that your brain has. The cats have very cute features that might resemble babies. Small noses, big eyes, large foreheads,  that’s what makes them so cute. Also, they have fur that is soft to touch, they have high pitched meows that makes everyone go ‘Aww!!!’ .  They also have playful behavior that lures you in.

The cuteness response was also evolved because cuteness can also cause you to take care of the cute creature, and that could be good for caring for your young. This effect also applies to other animals with similar features.

Have a look at the cat pictures below. Do you feel the cuteness effect?

Kawa of Care Slides

The Kawa of Care is an agreement about respecting your Chromebook and the students have full responsibility in taking care of it. As soon as you buy a Chromebook this is signed. The Kawa of Care is basically a treaty, or rules to abide by when you own a Chromebook. For example, one rule is to charge in a place where others can see you and the charger. That is to prevent tripping over or someone getting hurt. The full Kawa of Care is here but these slides are to encourage children to follow the Kawa of Care.

Measuring the circumference and Investigating Pi

For this measurement activity we used a long string to measure the circumfrence. The circumference is the outer part of the circle that is formed with an infinite amount of dots. Then we measured the diameter, which is a line that crosses through the circle. Both measurements of the circumference and diameter were divided together and most of them were just over the number 3 as a value. The result is called pi.  The objects we received were of different sizes and cylinder shaped (from glue stick to bucket).
